Key Notifible Disease Trends

  • Cryptosporidiosis:  66 cases of cryptosporidiosis were notified in February 2007 compared to 23 notified cases in the same month of the previous year. One case was hospitalised. The highest numbers of cases were reported from the Auckland region (17), Wellington region (15), and Waikato DHB (12).
  • Dengue: 39 cases of dengue fever were notified in February 2007 compared to one notified case in the same month in the previous year (Figure 1). The cases were from Counties Manukau (14), Auckland (13), Waitemata (9) and Waikato (3) DHBs. Eleven cases were hospitalised. Overseas travel was recorded for all cases. The countries visited during the incubation period were the Cook Islands (32), Samoa (5), Fiji (1), and Tahiti (1).
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib): three cases of Hib were notified in February 2007 compared to zero cases notified at the same month of the previous year. All cases were hospitalised. Two cases were aged under one year and one was in the 10-14 years age group. The cases were from Waitemata (1), Waikato (1), and Hawke’s Bay (1) DHBs. Vaccination status was recorded for both under one year olds (one received one dose, and the other was not vaccinated).
  • Meningococcal disease: based on the earliest date available, five cases of meningococcal disease were notified during February 2007, of which all were laboratory-confirmed.  In comparison, eight cases were notified the previous month, January 2007, and seven cases were notified during the same month last year, February 2006. For the 12 month period ending 28 February 2007, Tairawhiti DHB recorded the highest incidence rate of 9.1 per 100 000 population (4 cases), followed by Waikato (7.9 per 100 000, 25 cases), and Northland (7.8 per 100 000, 11 cases). The highest age-specific incidence rate was in infants aged less than one year (58.6 per 100 000 population, 32 cases), followed by those in the 1-4 years age group (13.9 per 100 000 population, 30 cases), and those in the 15-19 years age group (10.9 per 100 000 population, 29 cases).
  • Mumps: nine cases of mumps were notified in February 2007 compared to one notified case in the same month of the previous year. Four cases were confirmed, four probable and one case was still under investigation. The cases were reported from Auckland (2), Hawke’s Bay (2), Capital and Coast (2), Waitemata (1), Counties Manukau (1), and Hutt (1) DHBs. The cases were in the following age groups: 10-14 years (4), 1-4 years (2), 20-29 years (1), 30-39 years (1), and 40-49 years (1). Four cases were reported as being immunised (2 cases received one dose; 2 cases received two doses).
  • Typhoid fever: 11 cases of typhoid fever were notified in February 2007 compared to one notified case in the same month of the previous year. (Figure 2). The cases were from Waitemata (4), Counties Manukau (3), Capital and Coast (2), Auckland (1), and Canterbury (1) DHBs. Eight cases were hospitalised. The species involved was identified for all cases: Salmonella Typhi phage type E1a (8), S. Typhi E7 variant (2), and S. Typhi (1). Information on overseas travel was recorded for all cases, of which eight had been overseas. The countries visited were Samoa (6), and India (2). One of the cases who had been to India had also travelled to Singapore and Malaysia. The remaining three cases had no overseas travel (although two cases were possibly infected through food brought in from overseas).
  • VTEC/STEC infection: 12 cases of VTEC/STEC infection were notified in February 2007 compared to eight notified case in the same month of the previous year. The cases were from Waitemata (5), Waikato (4), Canterbury (2), and Auckland (1) DHBs. Two cases were hospitalised. Only 11 of the cases have been confirmed by ESR’s Enteric Reference Laboratory as Escherichia coli O157.
