Key Notifiable Disease Trends

  • Campylobacteriosis: 1456 cases of campylobacteriosis were notified in October 2003. This is the highest notification total for the month of October ever recorded.
  • Measles: 10 cases were notified in October 2003, of whom two were laboratory confirmed. This brings the year-to-date total to 51 cases, compared to a total of just 25 notifications during 2002.
  • Meningococcal Disease: 49 cases of meningococcal disease were notified during October 2003. This brings the year-to-date total to 490 cases. In comparison, 71 cases were notified the previous month, and 40 cases were notified during October the previous year.
  • Pertussis: 56 cases were notified during October 2003, compared to 38 cases the previous month and 103 cases during October the previous year.
  • Salmonellosis: 114 cases were notified during October 2003, compared to 102 cases the previous month and 138 cases during October the previous year.
  • Tuberculosis: 40 cases of tuberculosis were notified in October 2003, compared to 45 cases during October the previous year.
  • VTEC/STEC: 16 cases of VTEC were notified during October 2003, of whom 14 (87.5%) were laboratory confirmed.
