Key Notifiable Disease Trends

  • Cryptosporidiosis: 47 cases of cryptosporidiosis were notified in June 2007 compared to 29 notified cases in the same month of the previous year (Figure 1). Two cases were hospitalised. The highest numbers of cases were reported from Capital and Coast (12), Waikato (6), Waitemata (5), and Auckland (5) DHBs. Among the cases for whom this information was recorded, 63.6% (7/11) had contact with other symptomatic people, 55.6% (5/9) had eaten at a food premise, 50.0% (5/10) had faecal contact, 50.0% (5/10) had recreational water contact, 37.5% (6/16) had attended school, pre-school or childcare, 22.2% (2/9) had contact with farm animals, 12.5% (1/8) had consumed non-habitual water supply, and 12.5% (1/8) had consumed untreated water during the incubation period.
  • Listeriosis: two cases of listeriosis were notified in June 2007 bringing the year to date total to 12. The cases were aged 30-39 years and 70+ years from Northland and Bay of Plenty DHBs respectively. Both cases were hospitalised. It is unknown whether the cases had any underlying illnesses.
  • Measles: two measles cases, both still under investigation, were notified in June 2007. Both cases were children in the 1-4 years age group, and were eligible to have received their first MMR immunisation. The Waikato DHB case was reported as immunised but the immunisation history of the Taranaki DHB case was unknown.
  • Meningococcal disease: based on the earliest date available , nine cases of meningococcal disease were notified during June 2007, of which seven (77.8%) were laboratory-confirmed.  In comparison, eight cases were notified the previous month, May 2007, and 15 cases were notified during the same month last year, June 2006. For the 12 month period ending 30 June 2007, Tairawhiti DHB recorded the highest incidence rate of 9.0 per 100 000 population (4 cases), followed by Counties Manukau (6.3 per 100 000, 28 cases), and Northland (6.0 per 100 000, 9 cases). The highest age-specific incidence rate was in infants aged less than one year (54.3 per 100 000 population, 31 cases), followed by those in the 1-4 years age group (11.5 per 100 000 population, 26 cases), and those in the 15-19 years age group (8.0 per 100 000 population, 25 cases).
  • Rubella: two probable rubella cases were notified in June 2007. The cases were aged <1 year and 1-4 years old from Waitemata and West Coast DHBs. Both cases were not immunised against the disease. The younger case was not yet eligible to be immunised with MMR.
  • Salmonellosis: 81 cases of salmonellosis were notified in June 2007 compared to 58 notified cases in the same month of the previous year. The highest numbers of cases were reported from Capital and Coast (12), Canterbury (12), Waitemata (8), Counties Manukau (8), and Waikato (8) DHBs. Eleven cases were hospitalised. The serotype involved was identified for 76 of the cases. The dominant serotypes were: Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 156 (7 cases), S. Virchow (6), S. Infantis (5), and S. Typhimurium phage type 160 (5).
  • Shigellosis: 11 cases were notified in June 2007 compared to five notified cases in the same month in the previous year (Figure 2). The cases were from Counties Manukau (3), Southland (2), Waitemata (1), Auckland (1), Hawke’s Bay (1), Capital and Coast (1), Canterbury (1), and South Canterbury (1) DHBs. The species involved was identified for 10 cases:  Shigella sonnei biotype g (4), S. sonnei biotype a (3), S. boydii 4 (1), S. flexneri 2a (1), and S. flexneri 4a (1). Two cases had been overseas: India and Bhutan (1), and Malaysia (1) during the incubation period.
  • Yersiniosis: 45 yersiniosis cases were notified in June 2007 compared to 31 cases notified in the same month of the previous year.  Eight cases were hospitalised. Canterbury had highest number of cases (11) followed by Auckland (4), Counties Manukau (4), and Capital and Coast (4) DHBs. Overseas travel information was recorded for 22 cases, of which one had been to Vietnam.
