Major Surveillance Issues

  • Campylobacteriosis: 1392 cases were notified in August 2003 - the highest ever recorded total for the month of August.
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b disease (Hib): 3 cases were notified in August 2003, of whom two were lab-confirmed.
  • Influenza: 55 hospitalisations with a primary diagnosis of influenza were reported in August 2003,
  • Measles: 5 cases were notified in August 2003, two of whom were lab-confirmed.
  • Meningococcal disease: 57 cases were notified during August 2003 of whom 45 (79%) were lab-confirmed.
  • Pertussis: 61 cases were notified in August 2003.
  • Rheumatic fever: 29 cases (all from the North Island) were notified in August. This is the highest monthly notification total for more than 3 years.
  • Rickettsial disease: one lab-confirmed case was notified in August from Counties Manukau DHB.
  • Rubella: 6 cases were reported in August 2003. No cases were lab-confirmed.
  • Salmonellosis: 107 cases were notified in August 2003.
