Key Notifiable Disease Trends

  • Campylobacter: a total of 843 cases was notified in June 2004 of whom 798 (94.7%) were confirmed. Capital and Coast recorded the highest current rate of 559.6 per 100 000 population compared to the national rate of 382.2 per 100 000 population.
  • Cholera:  two cases of cholera were notified in June. The cases were both males in the 1-4 and 40-49 years age groups from Lakes and Counties Manukau DHBs respectively. Both cases had been to India. Both cases were due to Vibrio cholerae 01 biotype El Tor, subtype Ogawa.
  • Influenza: during June, 318 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 84 general practices (on average) in 22 out of 24 health districts.  The average weekly consultation rate for June was 22.3 per 100 000 patient population. Otago had the highest consultation rate (103.1 per 100 000).
  • Meningococcal disease: based on ‘earliest date available’, 27 cases of meningococcal disease were notified during June 2004, of which 23 (85.2%) were laboratory-confirmed. The current rate of disease was highest amongst infants aged less than one year with rate of 115.3 per 100 000 population compared to a national rate of 12.2 per 100 000 population. One death was reported this month from Tairawhiti DHB.
  • Pertussis: during June 2004 there were 182 pertussis notifications, compared to 129 cases the previous month, and 61 cases during June the previous year. Of the 182 June 2004 cases, 66 (36.3%) were laboratory-confirmed. Eight cases (5.5% or 8/146) had been hospitalised with one death reported from Counties Manukau DHB. Otago DHB had the highest current incidence rate of 83.2 per 100 000 population.
  • Shigellosis: 10 shigellosis cases were notified in June 2004 compared to seven notified cases at the same time last year.  The total so far this year of 65 cases is higher than the 45 cases for the same period last year.
  • Typhoid: six confirmed cases of typhoid were notified this month. This brings the total number of cases notified to date to 19. The current rate of 0.7 per 100 000 population is slightly lower than the previous rate of 0.5 per 100 000 population.
  • Yersiniosis: 38 cases of yersiniosis were notified in June, compared to 18 notified cases at the same time last year. The current rate of 13.5 per 100 000 population is higher than the previous rate of 11.0 per 100 000 population. West Coast with a current rate of 46.3 per 100 000 population is well above average for New Zealand.
