Key Notifiable Disease Trends

- Barmah Forest virus infection:
a case of Barmah Forest virus infection was notified during
October. The case was a female in the 5-9 years age group who had
been in Queensland, Australia.
- Brucellosis: a case of
brucellosis, confirmed through isolation of the organism, was notified
during October. The case was an adult male who had worked in an
abattoir in the late 1960’s to mid 1980’s before New Zealand became
Brucella-free.
- Gastroenteritis: 130
cases of gastroenteritis were notified during October 2004, compared to
66 cases notified during the same month last year. Two cases were
hospitalised. Over half (57.6% or 72/125) of the cases for whom age was
recorded were aged over fifty years. Ninety cases were entered in
EpiSurv as being linked to four outbreaks. The outbreaks were reported
from Waikato, Manawatu, and Wellington (2 outbreaks). The Waikato
outbreak alone in a rest home accounted for 68 cases.
- Influenza: This year the
influenza sentinel surveillance was extended until the end of October
to capture the late peak (Figure 1). During October 478 consultations
for influenza-like illness were reported from 79 general practices (on
average) in 21 out of 24 health districts. The average weekly
consultation rate for October was 28.5 per 100 000 patient population.
Otago had the highest consultation rate (102.6 per 100 000 per 100
000), followed by Rotorua (75.0 per 100 000).
- Meningococcal disease:
based on earliest date available, 35 cases of meningococcal disease
were notified during October 2004, of which 29 (82.9%) were
laboratory-confirmed. In comparison, 54 cases were notified the
previous month, and 48 cases were notified during October 2003. In
October 2004, Tairawhiti DHB recorded the highest current rate of 22.8
per 100 000 population (10 cases). Counties Manukau recorded the
highest number of cases (63) with a current rate of 16.8 per 100 000
population.
- Pertussis: during October 2004, 555 cases were notified which is the second highest number notified in any one month since November 2000.
