Key Notifiable Disease Trends

- Legionellosis: eight
cases of legionellosis were notified in January, of whom six were
confirmed. Three cases were reported from the Hutt, and one each from
Northland, Waitemata, Waikato, Taranaki, and Canterbury DHBs. The cases
range in age from 41 to 65 years. The species involved were Legionella longbeachae serogroup 1 (3 cases), L. pneumophila serogroup 1 (2) and L. pneumophila serogroup 4 (1).
- Malaria: four cases of
malaria were notified in January. The cases range in age from 34 to 51
years and have been overseas during the incubation period. The
countries visited were Tanzania (2 cases), Sudan, and Zimbabwe. All the
cases were infected with Plasmodium falciparum.
- Meningococcal disease:
based on earliest date available, 22 cases of meningococcal disease
were notified during January 2005, of which 18 (81.8%) were
laboratory-confirmed. In comparison, 17 cases were notified the
previous month, and 19 cases were notified during January 2004. For the
previous 12 months, Tairawhiti DHB recorded the highest current rate of
29.6 per 100 000 population (13 cases). Counties Manukau recorded the
highest number of cases (47) with a current rate of 12.5 per 100 000
population.
- Pertussis: during
January 2005, 423 cases were notified, a 31.2% decrease compared with
the peak of 615 cases in November 2004 (Figure 1). Of the 423
January 2005 cases, 119 (28.1%) were laboratory-confirmed and 11 cases
(3.4%, 11/321) had been hospitalised. Canterbury DHB had the highest
number of cases (116). For the previous 12 months, Southland DHB had
the highest current incidence rate of 660.9 per 100 000 population (74
cases), compared to a national rate of 101.8 per 100 000 population.
- Ross River virus:
one laboratory-confirmed case of Ross River virus infection was
notified in January from Waikato DHB. The case was an adult male who
had been in Darwin and Queensland, Australia during the incubation
period.
