Major Surveillance Issues

  • Cryptosporidiosis. Typical spring peak in notified cases of cryptosporidiosis, with 180 notifications received during September 2003, compared to just 60 the month before. Monthly rates nearly 8 times higher in ‘1 to 4 years’ age group than in general population.
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b disease (Hib): One case of Hib in a 41-year-old hospital worker. Laboratory results are awaited.
  • Leptospirosis: 15 cases of leptospirosis were notified.
  • Measles: 6 cases were notified. This brings the year-to-date total to 42 cases, compared to a total of just 25 during 2002
  • Meningococcal disease: 67 cases of meningococcal disease were notified bringing the year-to-date total to 436.
  • Salmonellosis: 105 cases were notified compared to 131 cases during the same month last year.
  • Tuberculosis: 44 cases of tuberculosis were notified compared to 28 cases during the same month the previous year.
