Major Surveillance Issues

  • Anthrax. In view of the current interest an overview of the disease in New Zealand and elsewhere is provided.
  • Influenza. The sentinel surveillance season finished at the end of September. Next year's vaccine has been decided.
  • Meningococcal disease. The number of cases since the beginning of the year is the highest since the epidemic began in 1991 with 468 cases and 22 deaths.
  • Rickettsial disease. Four cases have been notified so far this year.
  • VTEC / STEC infection. The first isolate of Escherichia coli 0157 from a food source has been isolated in New Zealand.
