STI Clinic Surveillance: Quarterly Report Apr-Jun 2003

Friday 19th April 2019

Summary

Sexual health clinics reported 1116 confirmed cases of chlamydia and 164 confirmed cases of gonorrhoea for the current quarter.

The increased number of syphilis cases noted in 2002 appears to have been maintained in the first two quarters of 2003. In the first quarter there were five cases reported and in the current quarter there were ten cases reported.

Cautionary note:
The figures presented here may underestimate true infection rates because not all clinics and laboratories participate and STIs diagnosed by a range of other health care providers, such as GPs, are not included in this report. It is also important to note the denominator used in calculating disease rates. Rates based on clinic data use the total number of clinic visits, whether for STIs or other conditions, as the denominator.
