Summary

Sexual Health Clinic Data
Between July and September 2003, sexual health clinics reported a total of 1067 cases (confirmed or probable) of chlamydia, 177 cases (confirmed or probable) of gonorrhoea, 200 cases of genital herpes, 926 cases of genital warts, 9 cases of syphilis, and 278 cases of NSU in males.

Family Planning Clinic Data
During the current quarter, family planning clinics2 reported a total of 619 cases of chlamydia,
58 cases of gonorrhoea, 39 cases of genital herpes, 129 cases of genital warts, and 2 cases of
NSU in males. No cases of syphilis were reported. In comparison, during the previous quarter
(Apr – Jun 2003) a total of 572 cases of chlamydia, 65 cases of gonorrhoea, 40 cases of genital
herpes, and 128 cases of genital warts were reported by family planning clinics.

Student & Youth Clinic Data
During the current quarter, student and youth clinics3 reported a total of 89 cases of chlamydia, 7 cases of gonorrhoea, 8 cases of genital herpes, 21 cases of genital warts, and one cases of NSU
in males. No cases of syphilis were reported. In comparison, during the previous quarter (Apr –
Jun 2003), a total of 77 cases of chlamydia, 9 cases of gonorrhoea, 2 cases of genital herpes, and 18 cases of genital warts were reported by student or youth clinics.

Cautionary note:
The figures presented here may underestimate true infection rates because not all clinics and laboratories participate and STIs diagnosed by a range of other health care providers, such as GPs, are not included in this report. It is also important to note the denominator used in calculating disease rates. Rates based on clinic data use the total number of clinic visits, whether for STIs or other conditions, as the denominator.
