Summary

Sexual Health Clinics (SHCs)
Between April and June 2004, SHCs reported 21 467 visits. A total of 913 confirmed cases of chlamydia, 182 confirmed cases of gonorrhoea, 193 cases of genital herpes, 931 cases of genital warts, 14 cases of syphilis and 250 cases of NSU in males were reported. 

Family Planning Clinics (FPCs)
Between April and June 2004, FPCs reported 43 985 visits. A total of 380 confirmed cases of chlamydia, 37 confirmed cases of gonorrhoea, 28 cases of genital herpes, 94 cases of genital warts and 1 case of NSU in males were reported. There were no cases of syphilis reported in this quarter.

Student & Youth Health Clinics (SYHCs)
Between April and June 2004, SYHCs reported 44 745 visits. A total of 116 confirmed cases of chlamydia, 7 confirmed cases of gonorrhoea, 5 cases of genital herpes, 52 cases of genital warts and 1 case of NSU in males were reported. There were no cases of syphilis reported in this quarter.

Cautionary note:
The figures presented here may underestimate true infection rates because not all clinics and laboratories participate and STIs diagnosed by a range of other health care providers, such as GPs, are not included in this report. It is also important to note the denominator used in calculating disease rates. Rates based on clinic data use the total number of clinic visits, whether for STIs or other conditions, as the denominator.
